JOHANNESBURG South Africa, June 7, 2022 -/African Media Agency (AMA)/- On Friday June 3, SAP presented its sustainability solution strategy for customers on the African continent at an event in Johannesburg. According to Tracy Bolton, COO of SAP Africa, companies can choose to focus on sustainability as a key strategy – creating additional business value, transforming their business by creating new products, services and solutions that reach additional customers, markets and segments.

“Essentially, sustainability is a resource management issue, and SAP has specialized in helping companies optimize their resources for more than half a century,” says Bolton. “The challenge is to make sustainability profitable and to make profitability sustainable. Technology offers companies the opportunity to leverage technology and bring transparency to their operations through better measurement of environmental, social and governance KPIs across their entire value chain. This can help African businesses identify areas where greater efficiency is needed to bring business processes onto more sustainable paths.

With a growing population expected to triple by the end of the century and relatively underdeveloped infrastructure, Africa is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Recent data also indicate that the volume of greenhouse gas emissions will continue to grow unless there is a drastic change in business practices.

Promoting the sustainability of companies and SMEs

SAP takes a two-pronged approach to sustainability by acting as an example of sustainable best practice and an enabler.

“As a company that sits at the heart of the global enterprise, SAP is uniquely positioned to enable more sustainable business practices for our customers,” said Bolton. “As an enabler, SAP provides access to enterprise networks and technologies that can help companies achieve their sustainability goals while driving profitability.”

SAP’s Ariba network, for example, is the largest of its kind in the world, enabling 5.3 million organizations to exchange more than $3.75 trillion in goods and services annually while providing greater greater transparency to companies’ supply chains.

“We integrate sustainability capabilities into a wide range of our business solutions,” says Bolton. “The SAP Cloud for Sustainable Enterprises portfolio offers business leaders access to a comprehensive suite of solutions that can be leveraged to make faster progress in achieving sustainability KPIs in their organizations, while the Sustainability Navigator provides a point of easy entry into the most relevant solutions for each client’s sustainability efforts.

Key solutions from SAP’s Cloud for Sustainable Enterprises portfolio include:

  • SAP Product Footprint Managementa cloud-based application used to periodically calculate the footprint of products at scale throughout the product lifecycle;
  • SAP responsible design and production, which enables organizations to meet their Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) reporting obligations to governments and regulators accurately and globally; and
  • SAP Rural Supply Managementa multi-faceted solution that connects the value chains of the most vulnerable – for example small farmers or waste pickers – to agribusinesses and global consumer goods companies.

“Customers can use SAP Sustainability Control Tower to define and track their sustainability KPIs using data pulled from SAP and non-SAP systems to align sustainability efforts across all aspects of their business, from finance, human resources and real estate to operations and purchasing. Our sustainability dashboard gives decision makers easily understandable insights into their sustainability performance, with actionable insights that can help drive continuous improvements in an organization’s sustainability efforts without sacrificing profitability.

Each company potentially an example of sustainable practices

SAP has made a global effort to be an example of sustainability by leading by example in its own operations and sustainable business practices towards a net zero world. This involves achieving zero emissions through better carbon tracking and a reduced environmental footprint, zero waste by embracing circular economy principles, and zero inequality by balancing social responsibilities in its workforce, sourcing and its sourcing practices.

SAP is currently on track to achieve carbon neutrality by 2023, two years ahead of its original goal.

Kwena Mabotja, Global Director: Purpose and Sustainability Marketing at SAP, says SAP is considered one of the global leaders in sustainability because of its commitment to running its business sustainably. SAP has the products, people, partnerships and programs to drive lasting impact at scale. “Bringing together Profit and Planet. It’s the economy.

“Our corporate social responsibility practices improve access to economic opportunities, education and employment, and the green economy. These programs are supported by a network of social partnerships, employee engagement, social impact management, and the technical and business expertise of our global workforce.

Mabotja cites the impact of initiatives such as SAP’s Procurement with Purpose program as an example of how companies can be exemplary in creating economic equity within their core business activities to achieve zero inequality. “We encourage social and inclusive entrepreneurship by supporting social enterprises that strive to solve key sustainability issues by redirecting a defined portion of our own spending to their own path. As part of our contribution to achieving net zero waste, the local SAP facilities team is also working to optimize water and electricity consumption in SAP offices using the IoT and SAP Analytics Cloud. The data and information collected in this way will be used to educate staff working from home to optimize the use of water and electricity in their homes, further embedding sustainability at all levels of our organization. . »
