VIJAYAWADA: The Taxpayers’ Association has strongly criticized the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), whose staff allegedly threatened people with penalties and removal of their names from various welfare programs if they did not pay the fees use for garbage collection.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the association’s general secretary, MV Anjaneyulu, said staff at the civic body were violating procedures and threatening the public to pay user fees for the collection of garbage.

“It is against the law to charge user fees for garbage collection without serving notices to the public. The civic body’s staff are circulating pamphlets to speed up their campaign to collect user fees,” he said.

Anjaneyulu also pointed out that VMC officials were forcing the public to pay user fees to volunteers and had not issued payment receipts. “In most cities, a majority of people refuse to pay user fees. By law, user fees must be used only for the purpose intended,” he said.
However, the sum of user fees for garbage collection collected by VMC is transferred to Clean Andhra Pradesh which is against the law, he alleged.
